This has to be the craziest story arc in recent memory. There seemed to be such clear evidence that all this was faked. Did the police obtain all this evidence improperly or something?
Jussie Smollett’s attorney Patricia Brown Holmes, speaking to reporters today, said records in her client’s court case have been sealed.
She did not provide details about the order, only saying that the state dropped charges against Smollett and moved to “seal the record in this case.”
“I have no idea what occurred in this case and why it occurred. I can just say things seemed to spiral somewhat out of control. We’ve gotten to a result that is the right result in this case and we’re happy for that,” Holmes said.

I mean, those guys either have a check from smolett or they don’t. I don’t understand the ambiguity of that.

My guess is that he did stage it, but the police acted improperly at some point, and the judge threw out the case because of it.

The city was allowed to keep his $10,000 bond and the case was sealed. Sounds like a sneaky settlement to me.

Wow, so there really were no winners in this one...though I guess the Nigerian dudes did get a nice paycheck.

Got a deal in order to share dirt on Geragos (linked to Avenatti)?
Down into the rabbit hole. It gets curiouser and curiouser...

I’m not necessarily saying this is what happened, but I’m also not saying it’s not what happened.

There is no limit to the corruption in this city. I can tell you that people here are pissed about this. His lies struck a nerve with a lot of people, and now he’s getting off scot free. There’s still apparently an open FBI investigation about the fake letter he mailed himself.

Ha! The news media is winner, clearly.

Funny, but there’s way too much smoke here for there to be no fire.
He agreed to forfeit his bail bond - that sure seems telling.

wow. what the fuck?
![]() 03/26/2019 at 13:19 |

That’s gotta be it, or some other fault by the state - they’d only move to seal the record if it looks bad on them.

That was hilarious!

Hopefully there is more to this story. With any luck this dismissal was part of a larger plea agreement involving an upcoming federal indictment. If that's the case, I hope it is made very much public and not done behind closed doors. This was some insidious shit he pulled.

Un fucking believable. This is essentially an open, admitted bribe to Chicago. AG drops charges in exchange for him forfeiting a $10,000 bond.
Corruption is bad, mmkay?

I don’t know why I keep finding myself surprised as how corrupt this city is..
And yet I’ll be a resident of Chicago soon. Yeehaw! :D

Avenatti is in some DEEP doo-doo. Deep, deep, doo-doo.

Funny how that indictment came out the day after the Mueller report dropped. Coincidence? I think not.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 14:23 |

I hadn’t thought of that. But I also don’t think it matters very much to me.
A certain Oppo friend of mine made this claim to me this morning and I am still trying to wrap my head around it, and I paraphrase: Donald Trump is the most-investigated POTUS maybe ever . So far, nothing has stuck. This makes Trump, but American justice standards, decidedly non- criminal. Others, like Mrs. Clinton, for example, are decidedly adept and not being investigated.
I think he has a point.

Must be nice being friends with ex president who can pull strings.
Who knows... maybe AG has a future in DC politics.
If that’s how we roll now, can we rename the country to USSR2.0?
![]() 03/26/2019 at 14:28 |

No worries! Holl ywood will blacklist him and he’ll never act again, right? Right??
With all the real shit going on, all we needed was for this prick to do this shit, and then just walk away. The justice system treatment of rich folks is ridiculous . It is not about how wrong or right you are - it is just about how much money you have. Disgusting .
![]() 03/26/2019 at 14:41 |

No joke. The implications of him getting no punishment for this (assuming he did it) are terrible.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 15:11 |

It’s crazy...
![]() 03/26/2019 at 15:12 |

I assume he’s getting no additional punishment because the CPD screwed up and/or he made a deal to get a bigger fish (his lawyer).
![]() 03/26/2019 at 15:13 |
|
A little too conspiratorial for me to believe...
![]() 03/26/2019 at 15:23 |
|
I’m hopeful that this is not a fame or money thing, but because of mistakes by the CPD and/or him cooperating against his lawyer in a bigger case.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 15:27 |

I feel like the “nothing sticking” point is probably more closely related to him learning, through his life and dealing with plenty of unsavory types, to never say or do anything that explicitly is against the law. He makes his will known, implicitly, and makes others do his dirty work.
Teflon Don II...

Piles of it, seemingly. Texts back and forth, a check for services rendered, suggestions on exactly how and where to do it (so the cameras would see)...

“ Prosecutors said they reviewed the facts and circumstances of the case, including Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and his agreement to forfeit his bond to the city of Chicago, and believe the outcome is “a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” according to a statement they gave to the Associated Press.

So, the law means nothing. Good to know.
Oh, wait. It only means nothing if you’re rich and f amous . If any of us were to try the home game they’d put us under the jail, just to make an example out of us.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 16:57 |
|
Ugh... I’m a straight, white guy , but I wouldn’t be surprised if the people most pissed off about him getting off with no real punishment are brown and/or gay. He did more real lasting damage to the people that actually experience racism & hate in those communities than anyone else.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 16:59 |

As a straight white guy, I am tired of being told that I am somehow the source of all this world’s problems, even though I have never shown an ounce of disrespect to anyone who hasn’t earned it.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 17:00 |

It makes so much more sense to make an example out of someone who’s rich and famous...

You would think, but they'd rather we didn't.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 17:07 |

Politicians and the news media are really good at talking about the things that continue to more deeply divide us as a country . It’s very good for their respective pocketbook s, but terrible for our nation and her citizens... I’m afraid to think where this path ends.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 17:10 |
|
Sadly, as much as we might like to in some cases , “making an example of someone” is not how our legal system should work, if it’s working properly. If only justice was truly blind...

Everybody is itching for a fight. T
rouble is, anybody who knows anything about fights knows to avoid them, as it usually hurts both parties.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 17:25 |

At least attempting to apply the law would be a nice example. Instead, they essentually took a payoff, and a small one at that all things considered.
Which also begs the question of how did he “forfeit” that 10k to the state, when the state presumably never had it to begin with? Unless I’m mistaken, h is bail was 100k. He presumably paid a bondsman 10k to secure his release which is non-refundable, win or lose. That’s the cost of using a bondsman, you lose that 10%. Now had he ponied up the full 100 grand he’d get it back after the case was disposed of. Somehow, forfeited doesn’t seem like the correct term. “Cut an additional 10k cheque” sounds more accurate.

What a spineless piece of shit. My wife is a criminal defense attorney - they shit that DA’s decide to prosecute is sometimes ridiculous . But no - an asshole inciting a race riot is not a problem.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 18:47 |
|
The motive?
I haven’t really Been following the story, but it seemed most of the evidence was just people saying things, not like, actual proof. You could pay somebody to say this or that to frame the guy just as easy as he could pay somebody to perform a hoax.
I’m not saying he’s innocent, just that it seems whatever his role was in it, it wasn’t what the police/ media said it was.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 22:12 |
|
Not sure, but I assume it was just to get additional media exposure (it worked).
![]() 03/26/2019 at 22:28 |
|
From the start both stories seemed all too convenient, but improbable, to me.
Maybe we’ll get the real story whenever the statute of limitations is up. I think it’s fairly obvious that whatever really happened was neither what he, nor what the police said happened.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 23:02 |
|
If he was innocent, there’s no way he’d be okay with giving up his $10k bond.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 23:18 |

For sure. I just don’t think what happened was what police said happened. Or they wouldn’t let him off the hook. This is like a D list celeb. they have no real reason to - except they fucked up somewhere.
